Concepts of fascination, from Democritus to Kant

Degen, A. – 2012

This study presents a historical-systematic outline of the conceptual history of ‘fascinatio’ from Antiquity up to the late 18th century. It is oriented to the lexeme and takes into consideration the historical variance of the basic approaches linked to it. I distinguish four basic theoretical approaches. I will demonstrate that a fifth approach, which defines the term as intransitive, dates to the late 18th century.
